One of my finest music discoveries of last year were Southend on Sea based four-piece Vox Empire, whom I had the pleasure of seeing live a couple of times while supporting The Virginmarys back in November. Highly impressed by their sound and a great energy coming out of their performance, I was hooked immediately and judging by the crowds reaction, their already solid fan based clearly multiplied and still keeps growing fast. This month, the band’s put out a fantastic new EP called Day One, which you ought to add to your music collection and if you get a chance, go and catch the guys live, whether it’s a street acoustic session or a proper full-on rock out at your nearby venue, be there and I assure you, you won’t be disappointed.
I caught up with Vox Empire’s lead singer Matt Linnen for a lil music chat.
Eva: Your new EP Day One is out. What was the release party like?
Matt: Was a lot of fun! We played a club night in Camden to see the EP in.
What are your fondest memories from putting the EP together?
Getting in the studio with our producer is one of our favourite things to do. He’s amazing at what he does and we see him as our 5th member. A lot of fond memories there!
Favourite track from this record to play live?
For me it has to be Home. Love Jonny’s solo at the end!!
You toured with The Virginmarys back in November and seemed to have a great time on the road with them. You’re both playing the Camden Rocks festival in May, are you hoping to catch up with the guys?
Most definitely! Looking forward to their show and to catch up with a jar.
What other shows/festivals are you looking forward to playing this summer?
We look forward to playing, full stop. If it’s on a street corner or a large venue, we look forward to it.. The louder the better though!!
How much of an input does each one of you in the band have towards the music making process?
We are a democracy, not a dictatorship. We all have an input.
What was it that triggered the idea in you to become a musician?
It just happened. I suppose the love of music from an early age.
Which other upcoming bands are you rooting for at the moment?
Half Moon Run. Great band. Also another band from Southend, a local to use are Future Ages…Big sound!
If you could have one super power, what would it be and how would you use it in a favour to your music?
To be able to bring people back from the dead and get to jam with artists such as Bob Marley, Kurt Cobain and John Lennon.
What are your main hopes for this year?
That we’ve played more shows than had hot meals. That would make me happy.
