Ones To Watch – Interview / IC1s

Striking live shows, distinct personality topped with confidence and all around brilliant sound – those are the main qualities of indie rockers IC1s, who have been creating a real buzz throughout the music scene in London and beyond. There’s something about this band that’s entirely fresh and exciting, something that makes you appreciate music in new different ways. I caught up with IC1’s lead singer Daniel Coburn to find out about the band’s recent activities, plus discussing the Camden Rocks festival, music making process and other fun stuff.

Eva: So what have you been up to during the first few months of 2014?

Dan: We have been working on new songs. We played the same set for a long time last year due to tours and all that, so we are freshening it up a bit and testing out new songs. We have some beasts to unleash on you.

If you were to describe your sound in three words for any new listeners, what would you say?

Ahhhh this question again. Think we give a different answer every time, so this time I will go for loud, exciting and necessary.

You’re playing Camden Rocks festival again this year in May. What are your expectations this time around and which acts are you looking forward to seeing yourselves and hanging out with?

Well we played two sets at Camden Rocks last year and we had no expectations, but what a day it turned out to be. We played The Monarch early on at about 6pm and then at 11pm we were headlining The Hawley Arms. So what does a band do when they have five hours to kill? Yeah, we got hammered but the Hawley set was amazing and the crowd were superb. Apparently, downstairs the chandeliers were swinging back and forth. Was Derek Acorah holding a seance? No, it was IC1s tearing Camden a new one. As for other bands to hang out with, we like a band called The Front so as long as their set times don’t clash with ours, people should go see them.

What would you say are the main qualities of IC1s live shows?

I suppose everyone takes away something different. It can be like a carnival and it can be like a freak show, but no one leaves disappointed. We are very energetic and I usually collapse after, so god knows how our drummer Andy feels. There’s a lot of dancing and stage invasions but we are cool with that. A lot of bands you see are making music to impress musicians and there’s no arsehole to it. We do it because we are music fans first, and musicians second. In fact, I’m the singer so I don’t even get classed as a musician. Gigs are the best part of what we do. You should come, everyone is welcome at our parties!

How is the usual music making process within the band?

If I told you, I would have to kill you. Shame as we were getting on so well. It starts with me at home on a three string acoustic with more holes in it than the manufacturer intended. I write the song, bring it into the studio and then everyone individually sprinkles their own little bit of magic dust and BOOM, you have it! I don’t think songwriting is something you teach. You either have it or you don’t! But I have to think that, don’t I?

If you were stranded on a desert island with one other band for a week, who would you want it to be and what would you do with your time?

Girls Aloud. You can leave the rest to your imagination….

What sort of advert would you want your music to be featured in and which famous person would star in it?

It would be an advert for Hugo Boss and I would get Russell Brand to star in it. He’s a Hugo Boss fan right? The swine!

If you had the opportunity to change something about today’s music industry what would it be?

Well you would have to get rid of downloads wouldn’t you? Let’s all get back to vinyl and and start getting excited about buying music again. Let’s read through the booklets, let’s file them all in alphabetical order and let’s all get geeky about it again.

Regarding music releases, what are your key plans for this year?

They key plan is to release our album Lowering The Tone. We are halfway through recording it and it sounds huge. Let’s get that out and go from there!

Main ambition for IC1s?

We want to be the biggest band in the world and I can’t see why it can’t happen? The timing is perfect, there is nothing out there but boring bands with boring songs, all put together to make one big boring album. There has to be THAT band that starts it all off again and there is no reason why that can’t be us.
